What is Smokin' on the Beaver?

About Smokin' on the Beaver

Founded in 2003, Smokin’ on the Beaver is a long‑standing BBQ competition and festival built around pitmasters, tradition, and community. What began as a local idea has grown into a respected event that brings competitive BBQ teams to Atwood, Kansas each year to showcase their skills along the banks of Beaver Creek.

At its core, Smokin’ on the Beaver is about the competition. Teams from across the region gather to cook on site, competing in categories like brisket, ribs, pork butt, and more. Throughout the weekend, visitors can walk the grounds, visit with teams, and see firsthand the time, technique, and pride that goes into competitive BBQ.

The weekend begins Friday evening with team check‑in and a relaxed atmosphere as competitors settle in and fire up their pits. Saturday is the heart of the event, with gates opening at noon and the competition unfolding throughout the day. That evening, teams serve their best work during the BBQ Feast under the Smokehouse Tent, a highlight that brings competitors and guests together to celebrate great food and craftsmanship.

Smokin’ on the Beaver has always been about more than trophies. As a nonprofit event, it raises funds each year for a different organization, allowing the festival to give back while strengthening connections within the community. That sense of purpose, paired with a welcoming small‑town setting, is a big part of what has kept the event going year after year.

Families are an important part of the weekend. The Kids’ Fun Zone offers activities like bounce houses, carnival games, and face painting, making the festival enjoyable for all ages. Guests can also stop by the merchandise booth to pick up Smokin’ on the Beaver apparel and souvenirs.

The weekend wraps up with an awards ceremony recognizing the teams’ hard work, followed by live music to close out the day. Rooted in tradition, fueled by competition, and supported by community, Smokin’ on the Beaver continues to be a place where BBQ and people come together year after year.

Why We Do It

Our Mission

Smokin’ on the Beaver was created out of a love for community and friendly competition. The event is about bringing people together, supporting pitmasters, and creating a place where friendly competition and shared experiences take center stage.

While space limits the competition to 50 teams, we work hard to keep entry costs affordable and ensure every team has a great experience. Smokin’ on the Beaver is built around the teams, and our goal is to keep the focus on quality competition while giving back through our nonprofit mission, supporting a different organization each year.

Honoring Our Roots

Thank you to our volunteers, BBQ teams, sponsors, and community for the time, talent, and support that make Smokin’ on the Beaver possible year after year. This event would not happen without the dedication of so many people working together. A special thank you to Gary Worthy, whose vision and passion laid the foundation for Smokin’ on the Beaver and continue to inspire what this event has become.
